ORIGIN & FUNCTIONS

DEPARTMENT OF RECREATION & PARKS

The Department of Recreation and Parks is responsible for the organization and conduct of recreation and parks programs; the development, operation, and maintenance of parks and other recreational facilities; and the setting of fees for programs, which may include the establishment of a procedure for payment of a reduced fee based upon a participant's financial ability to pay. The Department encourages the development of cooperative programs and joint use of facilities with the Department of Education (Code 1957, Art. 25, secs. 222-230; County Code, secs. 19.600, 19.601)

RECREATION & PARKS BOARD

The Board consists of seven members. Five are appointed by the County Executive with County Council consent. One is Chair of the Planning Board, and one is Chair of the Board of Education (Code 1957, Art. 25, sec. 226; County Charter, sec. 410; County Code, secs. 9-143 through 9-145).
