Mellon Fellow (american studies) and Assistant Professor of English, Vanderbilt University, 1986-89. Fulbright lectureship, Universities of Leon and Oviedo, Spain, 1992. Professor of English and Humanities, Bryant College, 1989-2000 (chair, english department, 1995-2000). Chair, English Department, University of Mississippi, 2000-06. Vice-President for Academic Affairs, and Dean of Faculty, Hamilton College, 2006-10 (acting president, spring 2009). Advisory Board, College Literature, 1994-; The Faulkner Journal, 1999-. Board of Governors, Willa Cather Foundation, Red Cloud, Nebraska, 2000-. Editorial Board, Willa Cather Review, 2001-. Board of Directors, Rowan Oak Society, 2002-06. Author, Faulkner's Apocrypha: A Fable, Snopes, and the Spirit of Human Rebellion (1989); Novel Frames: Literature as Guide to Race, Sex, and History in American Culture (1991); Willa Cather and the Myth of American Migration (1995); and In the Age of Distraction (2000). Co-author, Reading Faulkner: Absalom, Absalom! (2010). Distinguished Faculty Award, Bryant College Alumni Association, 2000.
